Aloha!

I create freehand contemporary

Polynesian and Filipino tattoos in Southern California.

  • Polynesian tattoos are a style of tattooing that originated in the Polynesian islands (including Hawai’i, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti) hundreds of years ago and are characterized by bold, geometric patterns and symbols that represent important cultural values and beliefs.

Filipino tattoos, also known as "batok," are a traditional tattooing practice from the Philippines dating back before colonialism, that involve intricate designs and patterns that often tell a story or reflect the wearer's social status.

  • Kurtis draws all his tattoos freehand on to his clients skin before he begins tattooing, which means that each design is unique and tailored to the individual client's body - including what they would like their tattoo to reflect. He creates tattoos that blend Polynesian or Filipino (sometimes both together!) motifs and patterns with contemporary or modern elements, resulting in a unique and personalized design.

This blend of contemporary work is a hallmark of Kurtis' style, and he takes pride in creating designs that help reflect today's culture.

At the core of his style, he aims to create something that reflects the wearer's individual story, heritage, personality, and values. He emphasizes the meaning and story as the largest influence on the design of the tattoo. He requires all of his clients to determine what they want their tattoo to represent, and will not create a design without one.

  • It's important to choose your tattoo artist based on their portfolio and not based on what you want them to copy or create for your tattoo. An artist's portfolio is a reflection of their style, skill, and creativity, and it's a great way to see their previous work and get an idea of what they can do for you.

If you like what you see in an artist's portfolio, then you're more likely to get something similar yet unique for your own tattoo. However, if you ask an artist to copy someone else's design or try to dictate exactly what you want your tattoo to look like, then you're limiting your artist's creativity, and you won't end up with something that's truly your own.

So, when choosing your tattoo artist, take the time to review their portfolio, and find an artist whose style and work you love. Trust them to create something unique and personalized for you that you'll love for years to come.

It's important to note that prior generations of traditional tattoo masters in the Polynesia and the Philippines did not use stencils either.  He does not pre-draw your design or create design for others to tattoo. Kurtis follows in this tradition by drawing each design freehand on the skin before tattooing, ensuring that each tattoo is tailored to the wearer.

  • Kurtis has also had the opportunity to enter prestigious tattoo competitions, including invitation-only showcases competing against some of the best tattoo artists both locally and internationally.

His talent and skill have been recognized by his peers and industry professionals, and he continues to try to push himself and his style of Contemporary Polynesian and Filipino tattooing.

He is not motivated by the awards themselves, but primary goal to show that our artwork and culture can be just as impressive and technical as other styles of tattooing.

  • Here is how to get started, you'll fill out the form on his inquiry page, and you’ll be contacted with any follow up questions needed to determine if it’s a good fit for both artist and client.

From there, he'll determine and chose which patterns best fit each client, and research/reference any needed material.

On the day of your appointment, he'll create the design directly on to your skin freehand using pens branded for tattoo use. The entire process usually takes several hours, depending on the size and complexity of the design.

One thing to keep in mind is that Polynesian and Filipino tattoos are often quite painful, especially if they're large or cover a sensitive area of the body. However, many people find the pain to be worth it for the beautiful and meaningful tattoos that result.
